A lab-grown diamond offers exceptional beauty and allows clients to maximise size and quality within their budget. It is an ideal choice for those seeking a contemporary, accessible approach to bespoke jewellery.

A natural diamond offers something different. Formed within the earth over billions of years, each stone is completely unique and carries a history that cannot be replicated. For many clients, that rarity, provenance and enduring significance are what make a natural diamond so special.

Both are chemically, physically and optically identical, and both are graded using the same internationally recognised standards. The difference lies not in how they perform, but in their origin, rarity and long-term value.

There is no right or wrong choice, only the one that best reflects your priorities, budget and the story you want your jewellery to tell.

Understanding Diamond Quality

Every diamond is evaluated using four internationally recognised characteristics, commonly known as the 4Cs.

Cut
Colour
Clarity
Carat

While each characteristic is important, we believe a beautifully balanced diamond will always outperform a stone chosen purely for size or grading.

01. Cut

Cut is the single greatest factor influencing a diamond's beauty.

It determines how light moves through the stone, creating brilliance, fire and sparkle. Even a diamond with exceptional colour and clarity can appear lifeless if it is poorly cut.

This is why cut is our highest priority when sourcing diamonds.

02. Colour

Colour measures the absence of colour within a white diamond.The grading scale ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Higher colour grades are increasingly rare and highly valued. At Daphne Huguette, we typically source lab-grown diamonds in the highest colour grades, selecting stones that appear bright, clean and beautifully balanced. For natural diamonds, we are particularly drawn to stones with subtle warmth and soft golden hues, specialising in naturally coloured yellow diamonds that celebrate the individuality and character found only in nature.

FANCY COLOUR DIAMONDS

Fancy coloured diamonds exist outside the traditional colour scale.Natural pink, champagne, yellow, green and blue diamonds are valued for the richness and rarity of their colour rather than the absence of it. Some of the world's rarest diamonds are naturally coloured, making them highly sought after by collectors and clients seeking something truly individual.

03. Clarity

Clarity refers to the natural characteristics formed as a diamond grows.

Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible without magnification. Rather than pursuing perfect grading alone, we prioritise diamonds that appear beautifully clean to the naked eye while offering the strongest overall value.

04. Carat

Carat measures weight, not visual size.

Two diamonds with identical carat weights can appear noticeably different depending on their cut and proportions.

For this reason, we always consider carat alongside the other three C's to achieve the most beautiful overall result.

Unlike diamonds, where the 4Cs provide a universal grading system, coloured gemstones are valued for their individuality. Colour, character and rarity often matter more than achieving a particular grade.

Colour & Character

Each gemstone has its own spectrum of colour, saturation and tone.

Rather than chasing the brightest possible colour, we often seek stones with depth, softness and complexity, qualities that reveal themselves over time and create jewellery with lasting character.

Because every sapphire, spinel or tourmaline is unique, we encourage clients to choose the stone that speaks to them personally rather than simply selecting the highest grade.

Clarity & Carat

Natural inclusions are part of what makes coloured gemstones unique and are assessed differently for each variety.

Carat measures weight rather than physical size, meaning two gemstones of the same carat weight can appear very different depending on their species, density and proportions.
